It is also unlikely the chairs are all from the same shop because they vary in characteristics of design and construction. The chair was not originally painted or stained as evidenced by examination of the underside, unpainted section of the seat frame. It has been thought that chairs like this of maple or beech were commonly painted black or stained to imitate walnut when new, but that was not the case."},{"label":"Subjects (AAT)","value":["Side chairs"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Chairs"]},{"label":"Bibliography","value":"Book: Benno M. The crest rail is molded and carved with scrolls and plumes, with pointed ears. The crest rail and a molded lower rail are set between two rectangular stiles with molded front surfaces. A caned panel is framed with the crest rail, lower rail, and two rectangular rails with molded front surfaces mounted between the crest and lower rails. The chair has a trapezoidal seat frame with exposed corners. The current woven splint seat is not original. The front baluster legs terminate in Spanish feet. The rear stump legs are continuous with the stiles. The chair has two baluster-turned side stretchers with a spindle-shaped medial stretcher, a ring-and-double-ball-turned front stretcher, and a spindle-shaped rear stretcher. The cane back is original. The chair has been repainted. Part of the right front foot is missing. A pod drill bit was used to make sockets for stretchers."},{"label":"Date Digitized","value":"2/27/2019"},{"label":"Marks, Signatures, and Inscriptions","value":"Stamped on left rear lower splat: [I]."},{"label":"Materials","value":"Maple; Oak; Cane; Paint"},{"label":"Style","value":["William and Mary"]},{"label":"Basis of Date","value":"Dated by DAPC staff as 1710-1720 (1975).
