The Old State House, the oldest surviving public building in Boston, was built in 1713 to house the government offices of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It stands on the site of Boston's first Town House of 1657-8, which was destroyed by fire in 1711. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts gave the desk to the Massachusetts Historical Society sometime before 1828. The overall profile of the desk is demi-lune with outwardly-curving left and right corners that create a subtle serpentine shape. The desk top consists of a fixed leaf and a hinged leaf. The fixed leaf conforms to the overall profile of the desk. The hinged leaf is demi-lune. The top surfaces of both leaves are covered with green baize that is outlined with brass tacks.  The front of the desk rises above the fixed leaf of the top. Eight vertical boards of varying widths are set side-by-side to form the case front. The upper edge of the front is covered with a horizontal rail that overhangs the front of the case. The rounded rail is outlined with beading and terminates in outwardly-curving scrolls at the left and right upper corners. The case has a bottom board that echoes the shape of the fixed leaf of the top. Four short, rectangular blocks mounted to the underside of the case bottom elevate the desk. The desk is mounted on a rectangular platform, which is not original to the piece.  The back side of the desk, where a writer would sit, is left open. A horizontal brace, of the same shape as the fixed leaf of the top and the bottom, is set beneath the top. Two vertical lopers are set between the fixed leaf and the brace; each has a single brass knob. The lopers pull out to support the hinged leaf.
