(44.5 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"Ornately carved Colonial Revival side chair reminiscent of the William and Mary style. Back and seat are caned. Crest rail features carved, seated female figure with long flowing hair at center surrounded by rocaille carving; a similar motif is repeated along the front stretcher. Caning is framed along sides with two foliate, mirrored s-curves. Splat rail has coquille at center, which is surrounded by sinuous foliate forms similar to those found on the crest rail.  The chair's back profile is flat and angles back slightly. Rear stiles are continuous with back legs and extend above crest rail, with urn-shaped finials topped with a small ball. Finials have stylized leaves carved in low relief. Below finial, crest rail joins at baluster with stylized flower carved in low relief. Attachment of rails and rear stiles is not visible for neither crest nor splat rails. Carving on rear stile continues with a three-quarter round then twist turning, which terminates in a three-quarter round and baluster with low-relief flower carving repeated from baluster above. Like crest rail, splat rail joins at lower baluster. Below baluster, there is a single cup turning above elongated baluster, where seat attaches to rear stile. Attachment of seat rail to rear stile is not visible. Carving on rear stile continues below seat rail with three-quarter round and twist turning ending with baluster, three-quarter round and ball feet. Side stretchers connect at lower baluster above foot with round mortise and tenon. Side and medial stretchers and front legs echo carving program similar to rear stiles with a combination of baluster, three-quarter round and twist turnings. Although joinery is often not discernable, glue residue is visible and, as a reinforcement, has helped joints remain tight and fixed.  Caned seat is trapezoidal. Seat frame corners are mitered. Front seat rail has scrolled foliate carving in low relief. Background has punch marks. Foliate carving is framed by narrow raised band with flat profile along top and bottom.  Front legs extend slightly above seat rail and have flat circular carved decoration at top of baluster turning. Low-relief carved flower motif from rear stiles is repeated on baluster on front legs.
