(26.7 cm)"},{"label":"Description","value":"A Federal-style rolltop desk and bookcase constructed of mahogany and mahogany veneer. The short pediment has a slightly elevated center block with a rectangular veneered panel. The front corners have turned urn finials on block plinths; the center finial is a carved eagle perched on a ball on a block plinth. The upper case has cove and cock-bead molding at the top and two cabinet doors with diamond-paned windows and inlaid outline key surrounds. The interior of the upper case has two adjustable shelves with cove molded front edges. Cove-and-quarter-round molding joins the upper and lower cases. The lower case has a slatted lid which rolls back into the case; the case edges around the lid have two rows of checkered banding. Behind the lid is the writing surface, which has a baize covering and can be pulled out of the case, and a row of eight pigeonholes with arched valances over four drawers with round metal knobs. The lower case has three graduated tiers of drawers; the top tier has two drawers and the other tiers one drawer each. The drawers are bordered by banding and outlined with light and dark stringing; the probably original brass knobs are stamped with a relief bust of Thomas Jefferson, and the keyhole surrounds are inlaid outlines. Between the top drawers is a veneered panel bordered with banding and stringing to match the drawers; this has the keyhole for the desk lid. The bottom of the case has a double row of checkered banding.
