The back is made up of seven spindles that do not penetrate the seat; the five central spindles form a comb with a rectangular crest. The two outer spindles are tenoned through the crest rail. The curved arms terminate in carved scrolled hand holds. Bamboo-turned arm supports that are tenoned through the seat and two spindles support the arms. The chair is painted black or dark green with yellow imitation bamboo striping on the spindles, legs and stretchers, and lining of the comb tablet, seat and along the upper part of the outside spindles and part of the crest rail. A small floral design is painted in the center of the crest rail.
