Letters to the editor and responses includes a particularly significant one written by Jesse Hartwell (not the well-known Chinese missionary pioneer but most likely his father, a pastor in South Carolina)where the question is asked whether it would be advantageous to create a separate Southern Baptist Convention due to the current distrust by southerners of northerners over the issue of slavery and abotlitionism. (The Southern Baptist Convention would be created in 1845 so this is an early mention in print.)
