The Hasidic Jewish community of Rockland County, NY has come to constitute an extremely powerful voting bloc, especially in the town of Ramapo. The Bloc is a work of nonfiction that addresses the impact of this electoral power on the Town of Ramapo, and on Rockland County as a whole. Based on original reporting that took place over the course of 11 months, it examines issues of class and race prejudice, economic inequality, immigration, and religious freedom through the lens of the school system and the real estate. It chronicles the impact of these changes on individual lives, narrating how the town has become more visibly segregated by race and class. The piece explores a living example of de Tocqueville's 'tyranny of the majority' from the perspective of the minorities—mostly Haitian, Latino, and African-American—and others in the community, who have been affected by these changes.
