Despite the fact that one in five Americans have disabilities, they are not often visible in society or theatrical depictions—if disability is visible, it is often through a reductive and stigmatizing lens. Through examining disability theory, the intersectional identities that work in tandem with disability, and finally, specific case studies in disability theater, we begin to understand the simultaneous invisibility and visibility of marginalized identities. The second half of this thesis is a play, which aims to depict people that have intersectional identities, including disability, who do not usually see themselves onstage.
