Throughout the musical history we know, woman have been rendered invisible through the patriarchal systems at work. This history is shaped through the reproduction of dominant narratives and hegemonic knowledge in a process that reveals some stories and erases others. The purpose of this thesis is to locate women within the social and musical realms and to develop an understanding of the systems that render them invisible in history. In order to correct this, women musicians have attempted to direct the terms of their musicianship and of their identities through control of discourse, radical performances of selfhood, and the creation of wholly self-produced art and knowledge. By taking up the Riot Grrrl Movement as a musical moment which, in its practices of music-making and expression of selfhood, resisted the erasure of women in history, the revolutionary power of the movement becomes clear. The Riot Grrrl Movement offered up potential for alternative modes of being a woman and a musician and created art and knowledge that demanded to be remembered.
