This thesis comprises a collection of short stories which center the lives and internal worlds of Asian American girls and women as they search for solace and recognition in their relationships with family, friends, and lovers. These stories aim to explore female agency, the conditions of Asian American girlhood and womanhood, and the relationship between intimacy and loneliness. They ask what it means to connect, to be vulnerable, and to be seen, and, conversely, what it means to conceal oneself, to protect oneself, to be safe. They interrogate and problematize the extent to which one can truly know another, exploring the difference between a life of acting and being acted upon. As the core of my education within the English major has been devoted to the study of not only fiction but also poetry, I additionally hope these pieces will reflect, within their prose, the song and precision that I reach for in my verse.
