This thesis considers the transcendental argumentation in the work of John McDowell and John Haugeland concerning the need for an external restraint on empirical thinking. It specifically focuses on the issue of the kind of access which we gain through a philosophical account to the content of experience. I argue that given the conception of experience which McDowell puts forward in his work — the only access we are permitted to having to experiential content is through exemplification. The thesis then explores the differences in the accounts provided by Haugeland and McDowell on the degree to which we can philosophically access the subject of experience.
