Dance has often been contextualized as the opposite of what the \"average\" person does. But beginning in the 1960's, with Judson Dance Theater's formation, pedestrian movement has been a concept employed by postmodern and contemporary dancers and choreographers, challenging the notion that \"average\" people and movement don't belong in dance. This thesis examines pedestrian movement – the movement we do on a daily basis – and its history in dance spaces, how socially upheld norms influence pedestrian movements on a daily basis, and the ways in which our movements are inherently more complex and nuanced than often recognized, even in the most progressive dance spaces. This thesis argues that pedestrian movement is inherently danced and performed, and that our movements are always changing in response to our surroundings; the people, landscape, and expectations of the space all help determine the intricacies and nuances of our performances. The first chapter is a historical analysis of Judson Dance Theater and their values with a specific look at how their vision regarding pedestrian movement manifested in their work. I offer an analysis and critique of Judson's relationship to pedestrian movement and how it has influenced the nature of pedestrian movement in dance today. The second chapter explores the ways in which social norms, constructs, and identities complicate the way we move and perform as pedestrians. In the last chapter, I discuss my own choreographic process throughout the year and how choreographing, observing, and discussing pedestrian movement influenced my research.
