Demand for the stable and efficient organic semiconductors (OSCs) has grown due to their potential applications in cutting-edge electronic devices. Phenazine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are of interest to the Northrop Lab because they are robust, highly conjugated, and have the potential to form uniform higher-order assemblies. These qualities contribute to the promising electronic properties of phenazine-linked COFs. A computational study was carried out on twenty different phenazine-linked COFs to investigate their potentials to be used as OSCs. Semiconductive properties were deduced through calculations of HOMO and LUMO orbital energies, ionic reorganizational energies, electron affinities, and orbital distributions at the B3LYP/6-31g(d) level of theory. These values were compared as functions of COF dimensionality, length, functionalization, and linearity. Clar's aromatic π sextet rule was employed to justify trends of smaller HOMO-LUMO gaps in linear as opposed to nonlinear COFs, and three-dimensional FMO representations were used to visualize the effects of electron-donating and withdrawing groups on COF orbital distributions. Synthetic pathways were pursued and optimized for several of the computational targets, and while ultimately no COF targets have yet been successfully synthesized, useful conclusions about intermediate protection and solubility were gained.
