Glasgow, MO - J. S. Thomson Banker and Broker 5 Cents January 1, 1863. Remainder. PCGS Choice New 63 Apparent. This is from a rare series encountered mostly as remainder notes (or lithographic \"specimens\" with punch hole cancels). Glasgow, on the Missouri River, was a strategic steamboat port until railroads supplanted that advantage. On October 15, 1864, Confederate Major General Sterling Price forced a short surrender of Union forces there, yielding important weapons from the storehouses. But delaying his return to the main columns of Confederate forces proved this to be somewhat of a Pyrrhic victory. Shortly after, Union forces under General Curtis defeated Price at the Battle of Westport, thus ending \"Price's Raid\" in the Missouri Theatre. Thomson, as an exchange broker, would have served needs of merchants, civilians, and the Union military. Branches of the St. Joseph's Western Bank of Missouri and St. Louis Exchange Bank of Missouri were located there. When this note was printed, the Union was firmly in control. This series was lithographed by Hatch & Co. N.Y. on white paper, and their imprint is at the lower left. The note has an interesting \"Lyman's Patent\" layout style to it. In the left third are issuer titles, location, and \"Dealer in Exchange, Coin, and in Current Money.\" In the right two-thirds, an eagle at top center is flanked by two red \"5\" dies, the date is across, and the denomination, \"GOOD FOR / FIVE CENTS / in Current Funds,\" is under the vignette. Serial numeral and signature blocks are below. This is \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and was the style cataloged as a \"Specimen\" in the 1981 Vacca sale. Vacca had 5, 10, and 50 cents \"Specimens\" from the series. The 1996 Western Reserve Sale (lot 501) had 5, 10, and 25 cent denominations, punch-cancelled and uncirculated, realizing $1,760. Those were later sold separately in the Schingoethe collection auctions by Smythe/Spink-Smythe. The 5-cent notes sold in the Part 14 Sale as lot 1268 for $546.25. Noted with \"Minor Mounting Remnants on Back.\" The back glue is nearly invisible. A rare note from a historic Missouri River location. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
