CSA - Lot of 3 Lower-Denomination Chemicograph Backs Proposed for 1864 Notes. These are private souvenir, or commemorative, notes printed uniface on bond paper using plates that surfaced well after they were created by S. Straker & Sons, London in 1864. Who and when some of these later souvenir notes were printed from the discovered plates is not certain. They are often seen in sets of six chemicograph backs with designs that were intended for the 1864 issues of the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, and $500 denominations. Back plates with these designs were ordered by the Confederate Treasury from Straker. Although the plates were made and shipped from London in early January 1864, they never arrived at their destination. Like later shipments of plates, they did not get through the Union blockades. This trio comprises the three lowest denomination backs: $5, $10, and $20. The first two are Choice New. The last, with some handling, is AU. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society\n\n
