The Sultan made serious efforts to repopulate his new capital, and his giant mosque complex with its social-service and educational buildings formed the core of a renewed quarter of the city; smaller complexes erected by his chief ministers served similar functions elsewhere. Mehmed ordered the construction of a fortress near the Byzantine Golden Gate. Known as Yediküle, the fortress of the seven towers, it had a star-shaped plan anticipating similar designs in Italy.
