MX - Massachusetts Bank, Boston Uncut Proof Sheet of $2-$2-$1-$1-$1 Notes Reprinted from the Original Plate. This is an unusual proof sheet reprinted from the original copper plate. It has a very rare, early imprint and uses a vertical array with two $2 notes at top and three $1 notes underneath. The Massachusetts Bank was organized in 1784, making it the second oldest in the United States after the historic Bank of North America in Philadelphia. It commenced issuing notes that year from plates engraved in Philadelphia and printed in Boston. For decades after, it issued many series of notes and types before eventually becoming the Massachusetts National Bank of Boston. The earliest note series are included in The Early Paper Money of America by Eric P. Newman (listed on page 218 of the 5th edition). The designs for that early series would be unknown, except that in 1884 the American Bank Note Company reprinted notes from the original plates at the behest of the successor national bank. The quantities of reprinted notes are not known today, but observation shows that some are much rarer than others. This series from the 1810-20 period is interesting in printing style. The imprint of \"Hoogland sc.\" is at the lower right of the vignette, and the engraver's name, \"J. R. Penniman del.\" is at the left. Printed on India paper only. Each shares a common vignette with the Massachusetts Arms, leaning backward, and the motto on a ribbon underneath. A plow is on the shore and a ship is in the harbor. Each denomination has different plate letter positions, and all have punch-hole cancels. There are some short splits in a few places, repaired with hinges from the back. Bright and sharp looking from the face. This is a very collectible later printing, made for commemorative purposes, and we believe both notes are unknown in issued form. Ex: Eric P.
