New York, NY - Corporation of the City of New York Uncut Double-pane Error Sheet of 4 Cents-6 Cents-6 Cents-9 Cents-12-1/2 Cents-12-1/2 Cents December 26, 1814 Harris Types H55-H58. PCGS Extremely Fine 45 Apparent. The Newman Collection contains some the most fascinating paper money rarities ever cataloged for auction. This is another wonderful survivor for the collecting community to enjoy and study. The sheet of twelve notes was printed by T. W. Mercein, Print., 93 Gold St., with the imprint on the back of each note. These late-December 1814 Corporation of the City of New York, or municipal, bills were essential for making small change in a period when few coins were available due to hoarding. Printed on thick, sturdy paper like several late 18th century change bill issues listed in Newman. The sheet was printed six notes down and two across using a currency practice of printing the two vertical strips (or panes) side by side, then flipping the paper over and printing their respective opposite sides. (This was done at Hall and Sellers on the Fugio sheets.) In the case of this twelve-subject sheet of two six-note panes, when the sheet was flipped, it was inverted and created two panes of notes containing inverted notes and double-denominations. The sheet almost made it to cutting and circulation, but after one pane of notes was signed by Pintard, the error was discovered and the other side was not signed. Instead, both sides are cancelled with a large penned \"X\" across each side of the sheet. Luckily, the sheet was not destroyed. Paper was valuable, and a sheet was unlikely to be thrown away as long it could not be \"spent\" as money. The denominations use simple, common faces with the numerical denomination at the center. The four back designs are handsome, with each denomination's back showing a different emblem: the 4-cent notes with an early steamer and the motto MOBILITATE VIGET (Mobility thrives); the 6 cents with a well-styled, three-dimensional rendering of Franklin's Fugio design with MIND YOUR BUSINESS and FUGIO mottos; the 9 cents (the only type with the denomination on the back) with a hand drawing a circle with a compass and the motto KEEP WITHIN COMPASS; finally, 12-1/2 Cents or \"Bit\" notes with a seated female (Hope or Agriculture) and the motto NEVER DESPAIR. All these mottos and emblems were relevant to the War of 1812 era. Although the sheet is noted with \"Repaired Splits; Minor Stains,\" it is an eye-catching piece and the only one we have seen. Individual notes from the series in Uncirculated condition are extremely rare. The paper cracked when creased and the small notes were heavily used.
