(Missouri Territory) - Auguste Aristide Chouteau Issued Promissory Note for \" ...one hundred forty dollars in cash, or notes of the Bank of the United States... \" October 8, 1818. Fine. This is a fascinating note issued by Auguste Chouteau's eldest son, Auguste Aristide. (Important information and documentation from the Missouri Historical Society regarding this and the following two notes was graciously provided by collector Jan Pallares.) Auguste Aristide was born in St. Louis in 1792, married Constance Sanguinet in 1810, and died in 1833 at his cousin's trading post in the Cherokee Territory near Fort Gibson. The elder Chouteau had reluctantly sent his son to a Montreal boarding school for a proper education, but he didn't adjust well to life away from the frontier. That he never attained the success envisioned by his father is demonstrated by documents showing that he [Auguste Aristide] and creditors asked the elder Chouteau to pay his bills. Hand accomplished in English. Issued to Augustus Labeaume and payable in cash or \"notes of the Bank of the United States,\" which would have been Philadelphia-issued demand notes. The witness, Albert Tison, appears to have acted as an agent in land claims and purchases while Delassus was governor. Laid paper, 19.0 cm by 12.5 cm. Docketed by Chouteau on the back: \"Aug A Chouteau / note To / Peter s. Labeaume / $140.0000.\" The paper is solid, with very minor splits only. There is bleed-through at top left from a smear of the docket ink. An interesting Bank of the United States-related example. Transcription: Six month after date I Shall pay or cause to be paid unto Augustus Labeaume or order the first and full Sum of one hundred and forty dollars in cash, or notes of the Bank of the united states which Shall be current as for value received as witness my hand and seal this eight day of October in, 1818 ----- testy Albert Tison Aug't A.
