In December 1587 he presented a proposal for a triple arch surmounted by a level containing two arcades of shops and three uncovered roadways. Later, in 1588, he produced another plan, opting for the present arrangement of a bridge with a single span of 28 m. This is surmounted by two footpaths and by two arcaded ranges of shops that face on to the central passageway and are interrupted at the apex by an open loggia that affords views along the canal. Da Ponte's proposal won the firm approval of the Venetian Senate, which therefore rejected proposals by Palladio and Sansovino, among others. Da Ponte invented an original system for the underwater foundations and was put in charge of the work on the bridge.
