Widely recognized as one of the premier monuments of Ottoman architecture, it was built above the Golden Horn on a hilltop site, part of which had been occupied by the Eski Saray (Old Palace). Owing to the survival of the account-books kept during construction and their exemplary publication, the Süleymaniye is the best documented as well as the largest of the great imperial foundations of the classical Ottoman period. The entire complex (250×350 m) includes the mosque, four theological colleges, a school for the study of Prophetic traditions, a hospital, an alms-kitchen, an inn, a bath, primary school, a public fountain, several public toilets and the tombs of the founder and his wife, as well as a residence for the grounds-keeper.
