MX - Lot of 18 Altered, Counterfeit, and Spurious Banknotes Ink Stamped \"Worthless,\" \"Counterfeit,\" or \"Broken Bank.\" Though most of the Obsolete host notes in this group are defaced by contemporary, often harshly inked stampings, they are artifacts from the period. They provide evidence of bank procedures when false notes were presented for redemption and then cancelled to prevent their reuse in commerce. Eric collected these for decades along with other false Obsolete types. Several are quite interesting, and there is a wide range of different stamp types. Most are on period counterfeits, but some are on notes that were from genuine banks that went bust or \"broken\" in the 1840s or late 1850s depressions. There are stamps from Boston's Suffolk Bank and Bank of Mutual Redemption clearing house, as well maverick stamps that may have been locally or privately made. Host notes are VG or so, but usually harshly stamped. A fascinating research group to build further upon. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
