Weingarten, MO - Lot of 3 WWII Period Weingarten Internment Camp Exchange POW Trade Coupons. An interesting trio of small coupon scrip for this Missouri POW camp that held captured WWII Italian combatants. Located in Ste. Genevieve County, 60 miles from St. Louis. The camp operated at full strength in 1942-43, but the fall of Italy in 1943 led to many of these Italian prisoners being reclassified (due to the swelling number of prisoners) and given less restrictions than German or Japanese prisoners held on the mainland. These local prisoners could be requested for labor by local farmers and paid with this scrip good at their local canteen. They were paid 80 cents a day, could be paid $10 per month in this scrip, and were entitled to buy one bottle of beer per day. The camp was closed in 1945. A common style for each. 1 cents, 5 cents, and 10 cents (which has broken in two). These appear to have been taken from a coupon book, but we are not certain.
