St. Louis, (M.T.) - St. Louis & Illinois Team Boat Ferry 50 Cents Undated (Ca. 1819-21). Remainder. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. This is another very rare territorial period scrip series and a fascinating title. A team boat ferry used a pulley system for moving the boats across the river, the power supplied by horse walking on a treadmill (that is, one horsepower). This company, owned by Samuel Wiggins, was authorized by the Illinois legislature to run a ferry from Illinoistown (East St. Louis) to St. Louis by an act of March 2, 1819. The original ferry route was owned by James Piggot and his family from 1797 to 1813 when the route was leased; that ferry was powered by oarsman. Because Wiggins was authorized by Illinois to operate the route, the owner of the former Piggott ferry company sold his complete rights to Wiggins, with the more efficient operation, by 1821. A 12-1/2 cent note paid the fare for a passenger. In this case, 50-cent note paid the fare for a \"neat cattle,\" for example, an ox (Bankers Magazine, August 1861, p.156). Notes from the series are not known signed. Printed by P. Maverick, Durand & Co., apparently with the same denominations as the St. Louis Land Office/Post Office notes from the same imprint. A common layout was used for all denominations: titles at the top, a large \"50\" in the center, and FIFTY CENTS across. The obligation underneath states: \"in payment of ferriage or redeemed / at the St. Louis Exchange & Land office / in Notes current at Bank of Missouri.\" Lathe work ends show ILLINOIS at left and MISSOURI at right. Noted with \"Minor Damage; Backed.\" The complete four-note denomination set in the 1996 Western Reserve Sale sold for $3,850. The individual notes were later sold in the Schingoethe sales.
