The villa garden was the biggest in Italy at its time of completion in 1671 and went through several mutations. During the 19th century it was changed to follow the English style of gardening. In 1911 the area was acquired by the Italian government and in 1963 it passed into the hands of the Comune of Rome and was opened to the public.
