The railroad was incorporated in 1832 and opened a 22-mile line between Hagerstown, MD and Chambersburg, PA in 1836. It was sold at auction in 1849 for $600. Passengers ride on top of the first car on the train at top center. Cameo-head counters are flanking. The dual imprint of Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty, Philadelphia/Danforth, Underwood & Company, New York is at the base.
