The island lies between two large bends in the river. The one upstream loops to the west, enclosing a flood plain later called the Campus Martius; that downstream curves to the east, bordering what is now Trastevere. Three of Rome's seven hills lie just east and south-east of the river (the Capitoline, Palatine and Aventine); the other hills are in effect riverward projections of higher ground further to the east. Between the hills the low ground was swampy, though drained in part by streams emptying into the Tiber. The island crossing and the defensible nearer hills formed a natural setting for trans-Italian trade and a town, though inadequate for the role the future city would play. Grove Dictionary of Art.
