The ruined walls that separate this chapel from the surrounding buildings represent the remains of the much larger Crusader church, and are evidence of the latter's original form and dimensions. The octagonal form of the chapel, and its location in the center of the octagonal church that has been reconstituted on the basis of excavations, identify it with the original Crusader structure. It undoubtedly underwent many rebuildings and repairs, for which some written evidence exists, but it may be safely assumed that these did not alter either the measurements or the basic form.
