The temple was rebuilt many times. The present version (1777) is remarkable for its golden steeple, which was plated with gold by Ranjit Singh in 1839. The Great Mosque of Aurangzeb is composed of masonry not only from the Vishvanatha Temple but also from an earlier Buddhist complex and possibly also a Jaina temple. The two colossal octagonal minarets (h. 70.7 m) of the mosque tower above all other buildings and form the most distinctive landmark of the river skyline.
