Though not unusually large, the gate is distinguished by its extensive and sumptuous sculptures, whence its popular appellation Higurashimon ('spend-a-day gate', implying that its beauty will detain visitors until sunset). The ground storey does not have a roof, but the next storey has a hip-and-gable roof (irimoya zukuri), a karahafu that runs along the four sides of the building, and a mawari'en. A pair of statues of samurai, which serve as gate-keepers, stand at the sides of a passageway in the centre of the ground storey. On the ends of the kumimono and on top of the columns are sculpted busts of Chinese lions. Between the kumimono are figures of Chinese mountain hermits and legendary sacred characters. On the second storey are sculptures of the heads of ryūba ('dragon horses') on top of the columns, dragons on the kumimono and hōō (Chinese phoenix) between the kumimono. On the balustrade of the mawari'en are sculpted images of Chinese children. The Yōmeimon is a virtual treasure-house of sculpture.
