By about 1800 the collections had assumed substantially their present shape, although important acquisitions were also made in the 19th and 20th centuries. Having originally been displayed at a variety of sites (such as the Stallburg and Schloss Belvedere), most of the collections were housed from 1891 in the building constructed on the Ringstrasse (at Burgring 5) by the architects Gottfried Semper and Karl Hasenauer. With its magnificent decor, including ceiling and wall frescoes by Mihály von Munkácsy (1844–1900), H. Makart, and G. Klimt, it is one of the finest museum buildings of the age of historicism. The enormous collection of Rudolf II in Prague was plundered by the Swedes in 1648, and only those items which had already been moved to Vienna were saved: these include the works by Bruegel and Dürer, pictures by Rudolf's court painters, works by Correggio and Parmigianino, and some items from the Kunstkammer (see below). Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614–62) is considered to have been the actual founder of the Picture Gallery. He acquired about 1,400 pictures during his period as Governor of the Netherlands (1647–56), the emphasis being on the great masters of Venetian and north Italian painting of the 15th and 16th centuries and Flemish painting of the 15th to 17th centuries.
