A massive temple originally laid out in the late 6th century BCE by the Peisistratid tyrants on the remains of an earlier monumental structure, the building was in the Doric order and was planned on the scale of the great temples of Sicily and Asia Minor. All construction ceased with the downfall of the tyrants and the temple's massive limestone column drums were built into the Themistoklean fortification wall (479 BCE). Building only resumed under Antiochos IV Epiphanes of Syria (175–163 BCE), who identified himself with Zeus. He employed the Roman architect Cossutius, and the new building was a giant octastyle dipteral Corinthian temple (110×43 m) with triple colonnades on its east and west fronts, making a total of 104 Pentelic marble columns. Work was carried out during Antiochos' reign, and in places had proceeded as high as the architrave by the time he died. It was left unfinished and only finally completed 300 years later by the Emperor Hadrian (reg 117–38 CE), who took the epithet Olympios and shared the temple with Zeus. At this time a chryselephantine cult statue of Zeus was erected in the cella, and a great marble-paved enclosure was built around the temple. Distinguishing between Roman and Hellenistic architectural phases is extremely difficult, however, especially since the column capitals of both eras are of canonical Corinthian type. Fragments from the roof of the building were found built into a nearby basilica of the 5th or 6th century ad, and the process of dilapidation has continued ever since. Only 15 of the original 104 columns remain standing, with a sixteenth stretched out on the ground where it fell during a storm in the 19th century.
