While hardly a scarce bank, with more than 120 large examples in the census, early notes from this private name institution cannot be regarded as common, with fewer than a dozen Brown Backs reported in all denominations. The bank was owned by James Millikin, who bought the failed Railroad Bank of Decatur in 1860 and operated it as a private bank until 1897, when he obtained a federal charter and the institution adopted the title The Millikin National Bank.
