(Jefferson City), MO - State of Missouri-Defence Warrant $10 Feby. 24, 1862 Cr. UG2. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. Another very rare Union Missouri Defence Warrant. Partially issued, but cancelled. The size is smaller than Cr. UG1 and there is an engraved date of Feby. 24, 1862, at the right. This date complies with a continuation of the authorization obligation on the note that they be \"redeemed or paid in for taxes before the first day of December, 1862.\" Lithographed by A. McClean lith. St. Louis. The Missouri State Arms is enclosed in flourishes at the lower left. Gothic titles are across the top with obligation, TEN DOLLARS in white within a black cartouche is below, and the obligation is at the bottom. At lower right is the same young girl's portrait used on Cr. UG1. The green TEN protector on this variety has a more decorative font with rounded details at the bottom. The secretary of state's signature line is blank, and Mosely signed as auditor. The issuing signature on the verso is that of Melville Sawyer as \"Paymaster M. S. M. [Missouri State Militia].\" Endorsed across the face in red as \"Cancelled\" and noted as: \"Slit Cancelled.\" This second, 1862 engraved type, might be rarer than the first and is also Rarity-10 in Shull-Criswell. The Ford Part X: Lot 4351 (ex: NASCA Vacca Sale: Lot 477, 1992 Criswell plate note), in similar grade, realized $3,737.50. Noted by PCGS as apparent due to being \"Paper Toned.\" A petty fault, as its uniform hue is quite attractive. There is only the faintest handling.
