St. Louis, MO - Cashier of the Bank of Lucas & Simonds -Springfield, Illinois $1 Oct. 1, 1852 IL-765 UNL. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64. This Lucas & Simonds proof is from a different series with an engraved \"Oct. 1st, 1852\" date at right and \"St. Louis, Mo.\" at the left. The title has fine print at the top with \"Cashier of the...\" and the notes were intended to be signed only by the cashier with one signature space (there were spaces for both cashier and president's signatures on the demand note series). These were payable \"in Specie\" to \"Thomas Smith or bearer on demand.\" This tie note is clearly St. Louis to Springfield, in contrast to the previous series which is vague about any city of origin, having only the state engraved on the plate. An India paper proof mounted on original card by Danforth, Bald & Co., Cincinnati. The wide hay-harvesting scene between the two parts of the title and the Tellus image at right appeared on the undated proof in this section. At the left is the familiar vignette showing crouching Ceres and a standing Native American princess. The engravers cleverly opted to add some interest by having the blade of the sickle cross the frame line and the headdress feathers brush against the scrollwork of the \"1\" die above. Plate B. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Card Stock\" as made. A very attractive example from this series.
