Recognized by the colon after C and before BECHTLER, K-3 is also diagnosed by \"28G\" being centered rather than high in the field as seen on the K-2 variety. Bechtler gold was widely circulated in the South and it is rarely encountered in Mint condition. Bechtler, a German immigrant, struck gold coins at his home near Rutherfordton, North Carolina, beginning in 1831. His successful private mint helped fill the need for a locally-produced medium of exchange in that state's gold-mining district.      This example is more sharply struck than average, with weakness noted only on some of the dentils. The luster is full and the fields are pleasingly semireflective.
