South Carolina 1767 Written Date 20 Pounds \"Sept. 3, 1767\" Fr. SC-85. PCGS Fine 15 Apparent. Several large-format certificate series were issued in South Carolina from 1750 to 1775. They generally were used to receive taxes or to raise money for specific projects. Several prominent South Carolinians signed these issues. This is a very rare type, and only 3,000 twenty pound certificates were authorized. Their purpose was to help fund the Customs House and new Watch House in Charleston. This is a large format note printed uniface on laid paper. Indented flourishes are at the left, and engraved denomination counters are in the corners. The obligation specifies that \"This Order Intitles the Bearer to a- / Credit equal to Twenty Pounds....\" At the lower right is an emblem showing a public building in the inner circle and the motto COMMERCIO above in the outer circle. Signed by the prominent Charles Pinckney (whose son would be a Constitution signer, Congressman, Governor, and diplomat), Benjamin Dart, Miles Brewton, Peter Manigault, Thomas Lynch, and Thomas Smith. The large size and delicate paper make these rarities difficult to encounter in high grade, if at all. Noted with \"Splits, Tears, and Minor Damage; Repairs.\" An antique vertical paper strip on the back holds the note together, but it is bright for the grade and generally complete. The signatures, date, and other pen accomplishments are clear. Almost as nice as the Boyd collection note plated in Newman. That example was sold as Ford Part III: Lot 806 for $3,737.50 in May 2005.
