Virginia July 17, 1775 2 Pounds Ashby Note Fr. VA-78b. PCGS Very Fine 25. This choice-grade bill is from the second series of Ashby-engraved large format notes; they were printed uniface on watermarked paper from copper plates. Remaining Ashby printed forms from the first, March 4, 1773, act, were placed into service, with appropriate changes in texts, when small ordinance note rag paper was exhausted. The series date is penned within the engraved obligation text. Signed by Johnson and Tazewell at the lower right and endorsed on the back by Robert Carter Nicholas. The left border has a wavy indent as issued. We have never seen an \"Uncirculated\" Ashby large bill from either date. Their large size made folding them immediately a necessity upon entering circulation Very Fine is high grade for an Ashby bill. Sharply printed and nicely pen accomplished. Illustrated on the color plates of the fifth edition on page 57. Another pleasing type note from the Newman Collection and underrated in faultless condition. Ex: Eric P.
