Lutesville, MO - Ozark Iron Company's Store $5 Jan. 1, 1874. PCGS Very Fine 20. A superb and high-grade, large-format high-denomination type. This is extremely rare and the first we have seen. The size and layout are similar to the $1 note. A fancy border all around has STATE OF MISSOURI in the top center. The United States Capitol building is at upper left with titles to the right, below which are the city and engraved date. The obligations are across with FIVE DOLLARS and a large red \"5\" protector at the center. At lower right is an eagle vignette with a \"5\" die above. The engraved manger's signature is at the bottom. The serial number appears to have been written in at a later time. The fancy green back has \"Receivable / for / Merchandise / at / Cash Prices\" in a central cartouche flanked by \"V/FIVE\" counters. All notes from the issuer are very rare, and most known are low grade or damaged. This exceptional example is splendidly detailed and displays vibrant colors. A prize Missouri mining note.
