Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64.  A superbly crafted and impressive National Bank Note Company India paper proof mounted on its original card. Stunning color tinting across the note provides excellent contrast with the vignettes. The bustling scene, In Harbor, is at the top above the curving title. Deck hands are busy unfurling the sails of the ship at the center. The dense conglomeration of masts and sails in the background shows Providence (or any major American port city selecting this vignette) to be a booming commercial city. The base vignette shows three barrels, one of which is numbered \"186,\" presumably so the last digit of the year of issue could be added later. The security features exemplify the Cyrus Durand patents he brought upon joining this \"rival\" to the merged American Bank Note Company imprint (the \"seven\" firms). The end panels mix full orange color composed of micro-numeral dies; black dies in the upper corners use overlapped lozenges with micro-lettered titles. Bridging the tint plate is lighter orange across the signature blocks and a central protector TWO\" under the oddly bowed black title. The layout is marvelous. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" in the India paper only and \"Mounted on Cardstock\" as made. We have seen a few examples of this proof series and type.
