A town hall building is mentioned here in 1135–9, but the Hansasaal on the first floor, which survived the great fire in the Jewish quarter in 1349, was part of a Gothic rebuilding. The Gothic nucleus of the Rathaus, together with its tower and Renaissance porch, have been reconstructed after severe damage in World War II. Nine tufa figures of knights (h. 1.85 m) are set against the south wall beneath tabernacles; they represent the Nine Worthies, ideal figures of chivalry and justice who are first known to have been celebrated by Jacques de Longuyon in his poem Les Voeux du paon (1312). On the storey above are the statue of a German emperor and the personifications of Cologne's most important municipal privileges, Rhine staple and military sovereignty. The evidence of the tracery on the other walls indicates that the Hansasaal must have been built at the beginning of the 14th century under the influence of the Cologne Cathedral workshop. This date accords with the figure style, which is related to that of the cathedral choir-stalls (1308–11) and to Lotharingian sculpture of the early 14th century. The confirmation of Cologne's privileges by Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian (reg 1314–47) in 1314 may have been the occasion for the sculptural programme. By 1360 a cycle of stained glass depicting heroes decorated the Hansasaal. The Rathaus tower (1407–14) was built after the overthrow of the patrician families by the guilds in 1396. The eight wooden figures of Prophets, now on the north wall of the Hansasaal (formerly in the Prophetenkammer), date from the early 15th century. The Master of the Cologne Town Hall Prophets based his style on that of the prophet cycle on the portal of Brussels Town Hall; the same figure types are found in the artistic circle of André Beauneveu. The extensive cycle of 130 statues on the storeys of the Rathaus tower also dates from c. 1410; only a few fragments survive on the tower portal. The entrance porch, the Doxal (1569–73), of the Rathaus by Wilhelm Vernucken is a unique copy in Germany of buildings by Sansovino and Palladio.
