The surviving cloister of the great Benedictine monastery of San Gregorio, it features in paintings, photographs and postcards of its next-door neighbor, Santa Maria della Salute. The monastery was founded in 806 CE, and enjoyed its greatest period in the 13th and 14th centuries. Thereafter it went into a long decline, until in 1806 its church was despoiled and turned into a gold-refining workshop for the mint. The Gothic cloister by the Grand Canal was built with columns and double buttresses in 1342 and sympathetically restored in 1911. By that time it had become a private residence, enjoying one of the best views in the world. The outlook from the first-floor Salotto del Camino is familiar from Sargent's many watercolors of the façade and volutes of the Salute.Mallalieu, Huon. \"Sale opens a hidden Venetian cloister.\" The Times of London. 27 November 2002There is a light, circular, orange discoloration in the lower center of the print."},{"label":"Subject (Time Period)","value":["Nineteenth century [LCSH]"]},{"label":"Physical Dimensions of Original","value":"24 x 18.9 cm"},{"label":"Image View Type","value":"Abbey / Convent; photograph"},{"label":"Collecting Area","value":["Kranzberg Art & Architecture Library"]},{"label":"Collection Name","value":["19th Century Architectural Photography Collection"]},{"label":"Subject (Geographic)","value":["Venice (Italy) [LCNAF]"]},{"label":"Description","value":"There is a light, circular, orange discoloration in the lower center of the print."},{"label":"Subject (Topical)","value":["Architecture, Domestic [LCSH]","Religious architecture [LCSH]"]},{"label":"Genre Form","value":["Photographs [LCGFT]"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Still image"]},{"label":"Medium","value":["albumen paper","black and white photography"]},{"label":"Inscription","value":"lower left, in white: C.NAYA fot.; lower right, in white: 306 VENEZIA ABBAZIA S.
