Marthasville, (M.T.) - J. B. Scott & John Young 25 Cents June 1, 1818. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. A historic, fully issued, and territorial-dated private merchant scrip note. The issuers are well documented in the historical record. This is also one of the most charming notes in the Newman Collection. Marthasville was west of St. Louis and was the last home of Daniel Boone, his wife, and many family members. Jemma and Daniel Boone were both buried there initially, until they were disinterred in 1845 and moved to Frankfort Cemetery, Kentucky. Both signers, John B. Scott and John Young, were leading residents. Dr. John Young established a tavern in the new town. He also built some water-powered mills and opened the first general store, at which this note was payable. John B. Scott as the clerk also signed this note. Printed on white rag paper by the St. Louis firm S. Hall, the imprint at the top center. Typeset obligation and devices are across the note. Different style denomination counters at the top flank the serial number space. A bolded \"25\" is in the center. Payable \"in CASH or GOODS (crossed out), at my store in Marthasville.\" Fancy end cartouches have \"TWENTY-FIVE CENTS.\" left and \"QUARTER OF A DOLLAR.\" right. With bold signatures and complete penned date. Noted with \"Repaired Splits and Tears.\" This is exceptionally vibrant and embossing is visible from the plain back. Uniquely styled, and we believe this to be the only example. The note is likely irreplaceable and its estimate is comparatively conservative. A priceless, early dated Missouri note. Ex: Eric P.
