Moberly, MO - Moberly Gas Light & Coke Co. $1 June 1, 1875. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. An extremely rare and unusual note issued during a time of financial depression that began in 1873, and the first we have seen. Similar to several municipal note issuers from the 1870s. Printed on white bond paper with the imprint of the Western Engraving Co. St. Louis. The frame, corner embellishments, and micro-lettered guilloche are in deep green. A wide farm scene at top center shows a woman milking a cow; oddly, a milking stool is upturned behind her. America with crossed flags and laurel wreath sits at lower left, and an eagle stands on a stars and stripes shield at lower right. The brown security back states: \"This note is payable in U.S. currency at par 6 months after completion of their works\"; flanking are ONE/1 dies. Plate A. No. 3591. Noted with \"Small Edge Splits; Minor Rust Stains,\" but those are scarcely seen. The face color and margins are superb on this great rarity. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
