The pairing of a Small Date obverse with a Large Letters reverse for the 1842 half dollar is more elusive than the Medium Date variety, though this does not translate into higher prices until the AU level. This coin has gorgeous blue-gray toning with gold highlights. The reverse die is characterized by many die cracks including those around the letters of the legend and radially from the eagle's beak to the second T in States. Another radial die crack bisects DO(L) to the tip of the olive stem and the eagle's right (observer's) claw. Only a few small gray wear-spots can be discerned over the high points.
