This short lived St. Louis bank issued First Charters and Brown Backs only before liquidating in 1895 to join forces with the Laclede National Bank to form the Merchants-Laclede NB. Incidentally, the building erected as the original headquarters of the Laclede NB, which eventually housed the merged institutions, survives and today is the home of the downtown St. Louis Hilton hotel. Three pieces from the Merchants NB are listed in both the current National Bank Note Census and the Track & Price Census, and two of the three are offered here as part of the Eric P. Newman Collection. The census lists no serial number or identifying information for the third notes, and that listing may well be a duplication of this piece, as the serial numbers of both pieces listed in the census are off slightly (although the Treasury number of this note is listed correctly.) All of the various censuses are in agreement that no example from this institution has ever appeared at public sale, hardly a surprise as these notes have been part of the Newman holdings for decades. This $5 Original note has a few small defects enumerated on the PCGS holder: \"Small Edge Splits and Tears; Minor Repairs; Writing in Ink on Face,\" but none are especially significant on a note of this rarity.
