In the second half of the 13th century Alfonso X built a Gothic palace (Cuarto del Caracol) that transformed the Almohad building and incorporated a garden into it. About 1340 Alfonso XI of Castile Leon (reg 1312–50) built the Sala de la Justicia, the first example of Andalusian Mudéjar art. It was, however, Peter the Cruel who substantially rebuilt (1364–6) the Alcazar using artists from Toledo and Granada and Sevillian Mudejar craftsmen. Notable surviving features include the portal at the back of the Patio de la Monteria, with a magnificent wall hanging protected by the sumptuous projecting wooden eaves; the main Patio de las Doncellas, an arcade of cusped and lobulated arches on coupled marble columns, surmounted by open arabesque work, influenced by the art of Cordoba and Granada; the Salon de Embajadores, crowned by a fine cupola with pendentives, and walls, arches and doorways covered with elaborate, intricate Moresque decoration in delicate polychrome (for illustration see Mudéjar); and the smaller Patio de las Munecas, influenced by the art of Granada.
