Attended the University of Vermont 1943-1945. She received a law degree from Boston University in 1948. Practiced law 1948-1959. Married Donald Herman Hackel August 14, 1949. They had two daughters. Married Arthur Sims August 28, 1980.\n</p><p>Served as city grand juror in Rutland, Vermont, 1956 to 1963. Served as commissioner of the Vermont Department of Employment Security 1963 to 1973. Elected Treasurer of Vermont in 1975. She was an unsuccessful Democratic party candidate for Governor in 1976.\n</p><p>Sims was appointed Director of the Mint by President Carter. During her term she ordered the destruction of old mint documents that would have been valuable for numismatic research. She served November 1977 through April 1, 1981.\n</p><p>She was known as Stella Hackel when appointed director. As Stella Hackel she appears on a Mint medal (USM 321) as one of the series for Directors of the Mint.
