St. Louis, MO - Cashier of the Bank of Lucas & Simonds -Springfield, Illinois $2 Oct. 1, 1852 IL-765 UNL. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ. The $2 proof from this engraved date series which was intended to be signed only by the cashier. Engraved on the note is \"St. Louis, Mo.,\" making it clearer that the note was being issued from that location and payable at Springfield, Illinois. An India paper proof mounted on original card by Danforth, Bald & Co., Cincinnati. The layout is exquisite with classic vignettes from this impressive imprint. Similar in layout to the undated $2 proof from the issuer previous, with the first part of the title slightly arcing at the top left of center and the latter part directly across the center with the denomination and text below. But here, the area where the Auditor's seal was placed is occupied by a diminutive train vignette (adapted from a larger vignette used on notes offered previously in this sale) and the dateline. In the tall vignette at the left end, two Native American hunters observe something toward which one of them gestures. The top of the tepee behind them intersects the TWO arcing above. In the wide vignette over the \"2\" die at right, three differently styled allegorical women have various symbols, including agriculture, liberty, navigation, etc. Plate A. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Card Stock\" as made. A gorgeous type and likely the finest known of the few that were in the 1990 ABN sale.
