The third Hortiz promissory note accomplished in Franch has another style of payment with mixed media of \"Current Money\" (peltry) and \"Hard Money.\" Tavern owner Jean Baptiste Lebeau was listed as a St. Louis landowner, along with Hortiz, as early as 1805. He [Lebeau] was married to Maria Hortiz (whose relationship to Joseph Hortiz is uncertain). Laid paper, 20 cm by 10.2 cm. Docketed on back as 'Billette de/Joseph Hortitz/xxxxx/ $200 /2.\" Considerable paper body remains. Folded, with some splits and partial chipping off the ends. Very Good to Fine. Beautifully penned in Hortiz' fine hand. French Transcription: Dans le Cours du mois de may prochain je payere a l'ordre de monr. Baptte. Lebeau deux Cents piastres, argant. et douce piastres gourd: pour autant qu'il m'a pret?, St, Louis, 6, aoust 1806 j,h Hortiz Translation: During next May I will pay to the order of Mr. Baptiste Lebeau two hundred dollars, silver, and twelve dollars piaster gourd (gourd translates to piaster in Fleming and Timmins' 1852 French-English dictionary; it is also a Haitian coin) to repay that which he loaned me.
